Why do I fear them, those trailing webs?
They cling to my face as I walk unawares in the woods
into the weavers’ orb
so artfully spun.

She, by far, has more reason to fear.
I am a giant:
a universe larger than she can imagine.

But maybe her hunger is all she feels.
I am not dinner
caught in her net
but I will not calmly stand by to embrace
the chance she mistakes me
for something to eat.

Instinctively fleeing
as prey from her fangs,
serene sylvan spirit now deranged
submerged and drowning in a startled sea of surprise
sweeping the webs from my cringing eyes
shuddering, unconscious, slowly I rise again
to the surface of panic.

And then
I remember
I am not afraid of spiders.
a conversation I had with ~Curttt about is recent photo of a spider on her web. [link]
reminded me of a poem I wrote for a poetry assignment based on a prompt about spiders.

I have rewritten this poem, taking out the lines which were originally given as the prompt for the assignment, so this version is all mine. but I'm not entirely satisfied with it, so I'll probably edit it again later. Consider this WIP.

Image is a cropped version of a photo I posted previously. Argiope. I'm not afraid of spiders...really...but these guys are HUGE and they like to spin giant [beautiful] orb webs across pathways... almost makes one wonder if they might consider eating people.

Sometimes I forget that poems can't be understood or enjoyed unless read more than twice. I'd like to say more, but I don't know how to say it so....*shudders* I may not be arachnophobia but I am definitely afraid of spiders. <_< >_> whew they're not here yet...but mosquitoes are. I got like 9 bites, kept scratching them and had to stop myself while sleeping.
