Description

yellow Mayfly perching on my bracelet while we were camping.

Pretty wings.

It's my understanding they live less than a day once they emerge from the water.

It might be sub-imago. I'm not expert on mayflies, so I'm not sure... It's body looks a bit fat, so there might still be water in it's bowel.
And you said it was easy to catch, sub-imagos are clumsier fliers then imagos.
Mayflies have a sub-imago form unique to present day insects, where they molt after getting wings.

Larva (lives in the water) -> sub-imago (wings, water in the bowel)-> imago (adult)

I am not sure why they have this form, exactly, or if it's something left from it's ancestors that had different kind of metamorphosis. Anyway, mayflies give some insight to the process of the evolution of metamorphosis.

I think they can live few weeks after final molt, but after becoming sexually mature and mating they die. Adults can't feed, so after passing on their genes, their life has no meaning.
